A business IT assessment reviews systems, operational risks and improvement priorities. Agree on its scope and deliverables first; a general assessment is not automatically a penetration test, financial audit or compliance certification.
Review operational risks
Examine backup restore evidence, access controls, patch levels, Wi-Fi coverage, connectivity resilience and server capacity.
Prioritise findings
Separate urgent security or continuity risks from planned upgrades. Record owners, expected effort and dependencies for each action.
Practical decision guidance
Include software licensing and application ownership in the review. Reconcile assigned licences with active staff, record renewal dates and identify applications whose support has ended. Confirm that business data can be exported or recovered if a supplier relationship changes.
Applying this to your business
A useful finding states the affected system, supporting evidence, business impact, priority and proposed action. For example, a restore test that failed is more actionable than a general statement that backups need improvement. Assign an owner and a date for checking the fix.
Before you proceed
- Agree access, scope and permitted testing.
- Request evidence and prioritised actions.
- Review licensing and renewal commitments.
