What Is SD-WAN for a Multi-Site Business

SD-WAN uses software-controlled policies to manage traffic across wide-area connections. It can simplify branch networking and route applications over suitable available paths, but it cannot create capacity or resilience that the underlying connections do not provide.

When it helps

Branches using cloud applications, voice and mixed fibre or wireless links can benefit from consistent policies and greater visibility.

When simpler tools suffice

One office with basic failover may need only an appropriately configured router or firewall. Assess performance problems and costs before buying a platform.

Practical decision guidance

Begin with a list of business applications and how each behaves when a link slows or fails. Voice may be sensitive to delay and packet loss, while a scheduled backup can tolerate a slower route. Define policy priorities and test them under load rather than relying on a dashboard showing that links are online.

Applying this to your business

For a Durban head office and a separate KZN branch, document which applications run locally and which use cloud services. Confirm how security inspection, remote access and central management will work if one site loses its preferred link. Include licence renewals and operational support in the comparison.

Before you proceed

  • Measure existing link quality first.
  • Identify applications needing path control.
  • Test failure, recovery and policy changes.
